Western Spadefoot Toads (WST; Spea hammondii) have a unique biology that is adapted to the harsh and unpredictable environments that they inhabit. Their range includes the Great Central Valley and neighboring foothills, and coastal California south of Monterey County. WST appear extinct through much of Southern California except in coastal Orange County, making this region a primary target for protection and restoration.

Pond Construction Goals:

  • Construct ponds that support WST breeding
  • Use constructed ponds to increase gene flow and genetic health of WST
  • Construct ponds that reduce colonization by invasive species
  • Restore upland habitat to promote WST upland aestivation and movement
